Cataclysm has gain great success and many players have questioned that, what can Blizzard bring us in the future beyond this brilliant game?
So now that it's clear that the fan-made StarCraft II mod won't be living up to our MMO expectations, it was looking like we would have to wait for official word from Blizzard to get our next MMO fix. Fortunately that fix is already in the works according to Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime. Interestingly though, it looks like Blizzard aren't looking to succeed the almighty World of Warcraft, but rather are working on an MMO that will co-exist together with it.
Speaking at the 2011 DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Morhaime revealed that Blizzard has some of its greatest designers working on the currently unnamed MMO.
Without giving away any details, we have some of our most experienced MMO developers, people who spent years working on the World of WarCraft team, working on this project,"
Despite having the experience of WoW behind them, Morhaime clarifies that the project is not intended to succeed the best-selling MMO, nor is it intended to merely follow in its footsteps:
"We're really trying to leverage all the lessons we learned through the years. Some of which we were able to address in World of WarCraft and others that maybe because of the design decisions we've made, you just can't address. So we're kind of taking a step back with all that knowledge to make something that's completely new and fresh. We're not trying to make a WoW sequel.
A daring move? Perhaps, but in the words of Morhaime himself:
"To break the mold, sometimes you have to start over"
